Caffeine, the chemical stimulant in coffee and tea, has been found to lower the risk of skin cancer in laboratory mice.
A study suggests that a skin lotion spiked with caffeine or with another compound found in green tea can reduce by more than half the number of cancer tumors on the skin of hairless mice exposed to brutal levels of ultraviolet radiation, said Dr. Allan Conney, a professor of cancer and leukemia research at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.
"We had between 50 to 70 percent tumor formation inhibition in the mice that were treated with caffeine or with EGCG (the other chemical compound)," said Conney, senior author of a study appearing this week in the online site of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers in the United States. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates about a million cases will be diagnosed in the country this year. Among them will be more than 88,000 new cases of melanoma, the disease's deadliest form. Skin cancer generally is curable by cutting, burning or freezing the tumor cells, but untreated it can be deadly.
To test effects of caffeine on skin cancer, Conney and his colleagues exposed 90 mice to high levels of ultraviolet radiation twice a day for 20 days. They used a strain of animals, called hairless mice, commonly used for skin cancer studies.
After the mice got their UVB doses, the animals were divided into three groups. One group were slathered daily with a solution of acetone and caffeine. Another group received acetone and EGCG. The third group got skin applications of acetone only. Acetone is an organic solution often used on the skin.
At the end of 18 weeks, the three groups of mice were killed, and the level of skin tumor formation was analyzed.
Conney said mice in all three groups developed malignant skin tumors, called squamous cell carcinomas, but the number of tumors per mouse was reduced by 72 percent in those treated with caffeine and by 66 percent among those treated with EGCG, compared to the controls treated only with acetone.
The treated mice also had fewer nonmalignant, sunlight-related tumors, said Conney. Compared to the control group of mice, the mice treated with caffeine had 44 percent fewer nonmalignant tumors, the EGCG group 55 percent fewer, he said.
Conney said that although both compounds were effective in lower tumor risk, caffeine has an advantage because it is chemically more stable than EGCG.
Unlike sun screen lotions, which protect against skin cancer by preventing the skin from absorbing ultraviolet rays from the sun, the caffeine's cancer protection works in the cells after exposure to the ultraviolet rays. Rays from the sun can cause genetic changes in the skin that can lead to skin cancer. Conney said caffeine apparently blocks this action by causing abnormal cells to kill themselves, a type of programed cell suicide that prevents development of abnormal growths.

bit of exercise and good sleep

* A bit of exercise and good sleep are essential too, not just for skin care but for your health as a whole. Avoid the use of soap on your face
* Keep your skin moist at all times. This is one of the most important skin care tips. Don't let your skin get dry. Dryness causes the outer layer of your skin to break, leading to a rough and unattractive appearance. Use moisturisers/ emollients. Moisturisers work best when applied while the skin is still damp.
* Avoid the use of soap on your face. Soap should only be used from below the neck. A small but important skin care tip.

DHA
DHA is dicosahexaenoic acid, otherwise known as DHA, and is found predominantly in fish oils. Trials are currently under way with this material on humans in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease where it appears to reduce the formation of plaques in the brain.
- DHA used be found in cattle and eggs, but this has reduced considerably due to cattle being taken off grass some time before slaughter and there is less DHA in factory eggs.
The synthetic supplement is synthesized from beet though is more expensive than the marine source.
- This supplement is also effective in those that suffer from heart disease.
There are many other natural supplements that have an anti-aging effect or that improve the memory.
- Most work by means of their antioxidant content, and there are new studies being carried out continually throughout the world. China is a rich source of such remedies, and as that country opens up more will be known about the scientific basis behind their pharmaceutical applications.
There is little doubt that the use of herbs and vitamins for better memory and longer life has a strong scientific basis, and that we still have a great deal to learn about the remedies used before the introduction of mass produced pharmaceuticals.

PUMPKIN
- Pumpkin is also high in antioxidants, and it is considered by the Chinese to stimulate the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
- The effect of increased insulin levels is to reduce the sugar levels in the blood, and reduce oxidation damage to certain cells in the body.
- It is being regarded as a possible natural treatment for diabetes that should reduce sugar imbalances and therefore have an anti-aging effect.

BILBERRY
Although used extensively over the ages for a large number of ailments, bilberry is generally regarded by experts as being another strong antioxidant. In fact most supplements that have an anti-aging effect appear to be antioxidants. This is because aging is closely associated with the presence of free radicals in the blood, and even the traditional antioxidants vitamins C and E can have an anti-aging effect on the body.
Bilberry has been used for the treatment of arteriosclerosis and various eye conditions such as macular degeneration and cataracts, and is commonly available. It contains flavonoids that can reduce the risk of blood clots, and hence of strokes and heart attacks. Although many of the medicinal properties claimed have yet to proved, bilberry is widely used as an herbal supplement.

COENZYME Q10
- It is not only the ancient remedies that are being found to have a scientific reason for their effectiveness in treating specific conditions, and Coenzyme Q10 is one of the relatively newer additions to nature's arsenal.
- This substance is contained in every cell in the body, and it has been found to provide protection to the brain from Parkinson's disease and other conditions that cause degeneration of the brain cells.
- This can help to improve memory, and reduce the effects of aging, though it does not relieve any existing Parkinson's symptoms.
Studies into the effects of Coenzyme Q10 are still under way, and it has been shown to be a strong antioxidant. It is also believed to reduce high blood pressure though this is still under review, and studies into the potential uses of the supplement are continuing.

GINKGO BILOBA
- The real mind boosting herbs and supplements are those that claim to boost the memory, cure memory loss and treat Alzheimer's disease.
- The queen of them all is probably ginkgo biloba, studies on which have provided evidence that it can be beneficial in improving the brain and memory function in early stage Alzheimer's, and in age-related cognitive decline (ARCD)
- . It is also believed to help in cases of certain types of glaucoma. These benefits might be due to the effect is has of increasing the circulation of the blood to the brain.
- Ginkgo is also a powerful antioxidant that can protect the central nervous system from the effects of aging, and protect the cardiovascular system through the destruction of free radicals in the blood.
- Free radicals can be responsible for mental deterioration and dementia in the elderly. Gingko biloba contains a number of different active antioxidants and chemicals that improve blood circulation to the brain.

KAVA KAVA
- The number of different herbs and plants, and the type of chemicals they contain, is massive, including various nutrients, antioxidants, hormones, enzymes and amino acids. The list of herbs under investigation is almost unlimited, though you have to be careful with some of them. Kava kava, for instance, helps stress and anxiety, and has been shown to have a positive effect in suppressing the growth of cancer cells.
- For other reasons, however, it is banned for sale in parts of Europe, including England, though the reasons for this are currently under review. It is commonly used throughout the Pacific for its soporific effect, but can cause skin and other problems if overused. Where it can be purchased, however, its use is thought to prevent the onset of some cancers including leukaemia.

HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE
- Another supplement that is contentious in its use is the Human Growth Hormone. This is used as a supplement in adults suffering from GH deficiency, and has been promoted as an anti-aging supplement. Whether or not it has this effect is still open to debate, though it certainly increases lean muscle mass and bone density in those with a deficiency. The first step in an anti-aging program should be to ensure that your GH level is as it should be.

· For superficial skin cancer Mohs micrographic surgery is the most common procedure wherein the tumor is gradually incised from the affected area of the skin in very thin layers and examined microscopically to verify the presence or absence of cancer cells. The procedure continues until the presence of cancer cells is negative.
· Simple excision is the surgical removal of a tumor including some of the surrounding skin tissues. · Shaving the surface of the affected skin area with a surgical blade. · Cutting the tumor from the skin with a sharp tool resembling a small spoon and then treating the edges of the immediate area of the cut with electrical current to stop and control bleeding and destroy remaining cancer cells. · Another option is cryosurgery whereby the abnormal tissues are destroyed through freezing. · Using laser to cut affected skin tissue or remove malignant tumor.
· Removal of the top layer of skin using a sander-type tool or skin defoliants to remove affected skin cells. Radiation: Radiation cancer treatment therapy is the use of x-rays or radiation to destroy cancer cells. These can either be external by using a machine outside of the body or internal by introducing radioactive elements into or near the affected area. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to control the spread of cancer cells in the body.
It can either be applied topically as a cream or lotion, orally or by intravenous and/or intramuscular injection into the patient's vein or muscle. Photodynamic Therapy: The use of drugs in combination with laser to destroy cancer cells. The drug is injected into the patient's vein and remains inactive until it is subjected to laser via fiber optic tubes at which time it becomes active and kills the cancer cells.
There is one thing in common with all of the above mentioned traditional treatment options for skin cancer - they are generally invasive. Although there is nothing wrong with the methodology, alternative methods of skin cancer treatment, which are now gaining acceptance in the West, espouse a holistic approach in the treatment of skin cancer or an illness. A holistic approach is geared towards the mental, physical and emotion aspects of the patient and not just the physical symptoms of the illness.
They proceed from the premise that an individual gets sick simply because his immune system is weak and can not fight the virus that attacks the system. For treatment to be successful, it is therefore necessary to strengthen a person's immune system including emotional and physical resources in order to combat threats to the body.
In the traditional model of Western medicine, once skin cancer is diagnosed and determined the only acceptable form of treatment is the clinical model. However, a study of the alternative approaches to prevention and treatment reveal that in consonance with the traditional method both can be very effective in treating advanced skin cancer.
Medical experts are aware that certain minerals and antioxidant vitamins that can be derived from fruits and vegetables help repair damaged body tissues and promote the regeneration of healthy skin. Now, medical practitioners are advocating the use of alternative methods of skin cancer prevention and treatment through a healthy diet and active lifestyle in order to protect individuals from the harmful effects of sunlight - the number one factor directly related to skin cancer development.
An active and healthy lifestyle and regular exercise is necessary in order to combat skin cancer since even stress cause the weakening of the immune system which then makes individuals more prone to sickness. With proper exercise such as yoga, tai chi, running and even acupuncture, the body's immune system can be made stronger even if skin cancer is already at an advanced stage. Coupled with a healthy and nutritious diet, individuals stand a better chance to fight skin cancer and strengthen the immune system to fight off the malignant cancer cells. One of the more promising discoveries is the effect of green tea towards skin cancer.
Taken orally or applied topically, green tea shows a striking effect on the skin in relation to cancer and carcinogens because it is a natural antioxidant. Green tea antioxidants (medical term green tea polyphenols) show a remarkable ability to prevent and inhibit the growth of various types of skin cancers from basal cell carcinoma to melanoma in tests carried out on animals and human patients.
However, those already suffering from skin cancer should never self medicate. It is good practice to consult with your doctor regarding the use of traditional and alternative form of treatments since there may be an interference effect between the two when taken together. Discussing any alternative treatment options with your cancer doctor ensures faster recovery and future prevention.

Tips To Help You Quit Smoking by Jon Arnold
Trying to quit smoking can be really tough. It can sometimes seem that if you quit smoking, you will be giving up your best friend. You know that it's bad for you, and you know you need to quit smoking, but it just seems too hard.
You can do it, though! Think about your family, and use them for the motivation. Or, consider the fact that smoking GREATLY increases your chance of all types of cancers, heart attack, stroke, and high blood pressure. Yes, you already know all that, but you keep thinking that it can't happen to you, and besides, you have yourself convinced that you enjoy smoking, even with that occasional tightness in your chest.
You can quit smoking, and here are some tips to help you get started today!
Throw away any cigarettes that you have left. Having them there in your sight will make it so much harder to quit smoking.
Try using gum or candy every time you feel the need to smoke. If this doesn't work, you can try medical products like nicotine gums or patches to help you quit smoking.
When you feel the need for a cigarette, take deep breaths for about 3 to 4 minutes. (Don't hyperventilate, just breathe slowly.)
Keep a journal about your attempt to quit smoking. Looking back over it will motivate you to keep going, especially if you see how hard you've worked.
When you think you want to smoke, take a ten minute walk. Think about how hard you've tried and what you have accomplished. Think of your children, or your spouse, or any other reason you have to quit smoking.
Often, the habit of smoking is missed more because you have nothing to do with your hands. It's psychological. Try doing something with your hands while you quit, such as crocheting, learning to play the guitar, or drawing.
Contact a support group. Going through this can be hard, and speaking to other people who are going through it as well or have already gone through it can make it easier. It's nice to vent your feelings to someone who will understand exactly what you mean.
One of the things to keep in mind is that you can think of all the good reasons to quit smoking, even including the fact that your hair and your clothes smell like smoke long after you've finished that cigarette. You can tell yourself that you are doing it for other people, but the most successful reason to quit smoking is to do it for YOU. Health Benefit of Green Tea: Cancer Prevention
There have already been numerous studies that prove that green tea helps protect drinkers against cancer. Statistics show that cancer rates are lower in countries where people regularly drink green tea. Research has shown that polyphenols are one source of the health benefit of green tea. Researchers believe that these substances found in green tea are influential in preventing the development of cancer.
Studies involving animal tests have shown that green tea reduces the formation of tumors for cancers of the skin, esophagus, bladder, pancreas, ovary cancer and prostate. The antioxidant activity in green tea has
been reported to produce such results. Researchers are also of the belief that polyphenols are essential in destroying cancerous cells and stopping their progression.
Skin Cancer
Scientific research suggests that the main polyphenol in green tea, which is called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and other green tea polyphenols possess anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. One study
has been done on the health benefit of green tea on the skin. The study showed that drinking tea helps prevent the onset and growth of skin tumors.
Esophageal Cancer
Animal studies have also been conducted and they showed that green tea polyphenols help stop the growth of esophageal cancer cells. However, studies done on people have various results regarding the health
benefit of green tea. One study showed that green tea consumption is an effective way to be protected from esophageal cancer, specifically among women. But another study showed that drinking green tea increased
the risk of developing esophageal cancer. This shows that before green tea can be recommended for esophageal cancer prevention, more research has to be done.
Bladder Cancer
A few studies have been conducted on the health benefit of green tea on the human bladder. Research has been done to determine if there's a connection between bladder cancer and consumption of green tea. One
study revealed that women who drank green tea reduced their probability of developing bladder cancer. The study was followed with another one revealing that patients with bladder cancer, specifically men, who
consumed green tea had a significantly improved chance of surviving compared to those who did not drink tea.
Pancreatic Cancer
Research has also been done on the health benefit of green tea on the pancreas. A study found that men and women who drank green tea had lesser chances of developing cancer in the pancreas. However, the study
didn't particularly point out that green tea was exclusively responsible for reducing the risk of pancreatic cancer. Researchers still need further studies before they can start recommending green tea for pancreatic
cancer prevention.
Ovarian Cancer
In China, a study was conducted on patients with ovarian cancer. It was observed that women who drank a cup of green tea a day were able to survive longer and lived the longest compared to women who did not drink
tea at all.
Prostate Cancer
Green tea extracts have been shown in laboratory studies to prevent the development of prostate cancer cells in test tubes. A large study showed that people who drank green tea with increasing frequency, quantity
and duration reduced their risk of developing prostate cancer.

Anti Aging Skin Care- External Factors That Cause Aging In Skin
Skin ages a lot because of external factors. In this article we will find out about the external factors and how we can prevent them aging our skin.
Sun:
The sunrays consist of many light spectrums. Ultra violet rays damage the skin most. Both UVA and UVB are responsible for skin damage. Aging due to sun is called photo aging. Sun breaks down the collagen and elastin in the skin. The skin loses its elasticity and firmness and develops premature wrinkles. Photo aging depends on the skin color and the amount of sun exposure over the years. Dark-skinned individuals show less sun damage, while fair-skinned people show more sun damage for the same exposure. With increasing age, the total sun exposure increases and it gives rise not only to age spots, but also to more serious problems such as actinic keratoses and skin cancers. The only way to prevent sun damage is protection from the sun.
Gravity:
As you know gravity pulls everything towards the earth. As we age, the effect of gravity becomes evident on the skin. The loss of elastin in the skin with aging plays a role in this. In younger age, elastin pulls skin back to its usual position. As we age, that elasticity is lost. With gravity, jowls form.
Smoking:
Tobacco plays a major role in skin aging. It is found that smokers form wrinkles sooner than non-smokers. Tobacco narrows the blood vessels in the outer layers of skin. This reduces blood flow to the skin and nutrients don't reach it in required amount. In addition to this, the expression one makes while inhaling the smoke also causes wrinkles. Smokers also develop a yellow hue to their skin. By quitting smoking, this damage can be stopped to a certain extent.

Cancer Preventive Measures and Tips
Cancer also called is Malignancy and Neoplasms. Cancer is a serious, but curable illness. Cancer is not one disease, but many diseases that occur in different areas of the body. Cancer is a disease characterized by disorderly division of cells, combined with the malignant behavior of these cells. Cancer is usually classified according to the tissue of origin more than the location of manifestations. Prognosis in most cases depends on the original staging of the disease. There are many theories about the cause of cancer. Cell division or cell proliferation is a physiological process that occurs in almost all tissues and under many circumstances. Normally the balance between proliferation and apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is tightly regulated to ensure the integrity of organs and tissues. Imbalances in the rates of cell division and cell death can lead to tumor growth in a tissue. Other events are usually required before metastasis can occur. Locally expansile tumors can also cause severe problems when they grow in certain locations, such as the head or airway. Environmental stimuli, or carcinogens, such as tobacco smoke, radiation, chemicals, or infectious agents, can cause cancer. Cancer can also occur in young children and adolescents, but it is rare. Some studies have concluded that pediatric cancers, especially leukemia, are on an upward trend.
Cancer is caused by exposure to carcinogens (cancer causing substances), which alter and damage DNA. Cancers are classified by the type of cell that resembles the tumor and, therefore, the tissue presumed to be the origin of the tumor. Carcinoma often develops as a result of a very improper lifestyle. Carcinoma: malignant tumors derived from epithelial cells. This group represents the most common cancers, including the common forms of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer. Lymphoma and Leukemia: malignant tumors derived from blood and bone marrow cells Sarcoma: malignant tumors derived from connective tissue, or esenchymal cells. Mesothelioma: tumors derived from the mesothelial cells lining the peritoneum and the pleura. Glioma: tumors derived from glia, the most common type of brain cell. Germ cell tumor: tumors derived from reproductive cells, most commonly found in the testicle and ovary. Female and male infants have essentially the same overall cancer incidence rates, but white infants have substantially higher cancer rates than black infants for most cancer types. Relative survival for infants is very good for neuroblastoma, Wilms' tumor and retinoblastoma, and fairly good (80%) for leukemia, but not for most other types of cancer.
Tips on Cancer Prevention
1. Limit alcohol.
2. Maintain a healthy weight. 3. Stay physically active.
4. Consider limiting fat in your diet.
5. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other UVA/UVB sources, such as tanning beds.
6. Use ample amounts of sunscreen or sunblock with an SPF of 15 or higher every day, even if it is cloudy.
7. Wear large framed or wrap-around sunglasses to protect the eye area.
8. Have your skin checked by a dermatologist regularly.
9. Do avoid all poisonous chemical substances such as cigarettes, alcohol, car exhaust fumes, as well as fumes belched by factory chimneys, which are very toxic.
10. Anilin is a carcenogenic substance used for colouring food, so try to avoid artificially dyed foods and instead look for natural foods.

Skin Care- All about Moles-2
In the first part of this article we found out about how moles form and the types of moles. In this article, we will find out about the dangers of moles and some facts.
Moles- Look for Threatening Changes
Moles change over the years. Some grow bigger in size and ultimately fall off by rubbing. Some become lighter in color and fade away. Some grow hair. Mole changes indicate the presence of malignant melanoma (cancer). Please carefully do self-examination of your skin all over the body regularly and note any changes in moles. The easy way is ABCD of Melanoma. That will tell you about probable malignancy. If you detect a malignancy at an early stage, the chances of recovery increase manifold. Find out about skin self-examination and ABCD of Melanoma. Read more about malignant melanoma here. If youare prepared with the power of knowledge, you will save your life.
Moles- removal
Many times, the doctor surgically removes moles. The doctor may remove a mole by anesthetizing the area and cutting it off with a blade or with electric surgery. Sometimes the mole and its surrounding portion are removed totally from the body and the sample is sent to lab for examination. Moles can be removed for reasons such as suspected melanoma, cosmetic appearance, or plain nuisance.
Moles- Facts
- Moles form because of accumulation of melanin.
- Congenital moles can develop in cancers.
- Moles sometimes fade away over years.
- Because of sun exposure, existing moles become darker and new moles appear.
- Watching moles carefully for changes may prevent skin cancer.
- Suspicious looking moles should be removed.
- Moles, unlike warts, are not formed because of any virus.

Insight Into Skin Cancer Treatments
There are several options available for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. The following are the normal procedures employed to determine whether a patient has skin cancer:
· Skin examination by a qualified individual to check for bumps or spots that may look unusual in terms of color, size, shape, or texture.
· A pathological examination (biopsy) procedure on a portion of the abnormal-looking growth to determine the presence of cancer cells. This can be accomplished in any of 3 methods: shave biopsy wherein a surgical razor is used to shave-off parts of the suspected growth; punch biopsy wherein an instrument called a trephine is used to remove a circle of tissue from the growth and excisional biopsy wherein the entire growth is removed surgically with the use of a scalpel.
Treatment and recovery of skin cancer depends significantly on the conditions or stage of the cancer, there is no sure fire method of treating and managing skin cancer as each case is unique to the individual and is also influenced by factors such as the type of the cancer, location and size of the tumor (whether it has metastasized or not) and the patient's overall health and physical condition.
In the traditional method of treatment, there are four options available.
Surgery: There are various surgical procedures employed for the treatment of the non-melanoma type of skin cancer.

Natural Health Therapies and Cancer
This article is the fifth and final installment of a series on Natural Health Therapies and Cancer. The material presented is meant to inform you of complementary cancer therapies that are available in the medical community. These therapies are to be used in cooperation with other cancer treatment methods. They are not meant to replace your physician's care.
So far, we have discussed the basics of cancer, looked at a list of causes, reviewed the various types and stages of cancer, and examined the use of nutrition and herbal supplements as forms of cancer therapy. We have also talked about various physical support therapies and their benefits for individuals with cancer. In this article, we will investigate the use of Energy Support Therapies for cancer. These methods include Electrodermal Screening, Magnetic Therapy, and Light Therapy.
'Energy Medicine' refers to any therapies or testing that use an energy field such as electrical, magnetic, sonic, microwave, infrared, or acoustic energy. We've all been exposed to energy medicine before. EKGs for heart activity, EMGs for muscle tests, EEGs for brain waves, and MRIs for scanning body parts are all examples of energy medicine techniques.
The basic principle in energy medicine is that a disease will show an energy change before it becomes a full-blown illness. The energy flow is based on acupuncture meridians known for thousands of years. These meridians are pathways for energy flow. The concept of energy flow in the meridians is similar to the flow of blood in the arteries and veins in our circulatory system. Studies done in Germany and at Stanford University verified that there is electrical conduction through the acupuncture meridians, that the energy changes at the traditional acupuncture points, and that the energy changes when health is poor.
Electrodermal Screening Testing the skin surface to determine if there are any imbalances in the energy flow is called electrodermal screening. It is done by touching a small probe to certain points on the hands and feet, which generates information on a computer. A point value on a scale of 0-100 is assigned to the various readings. Scores in the 45-55 range are considered normal. Readings below 45 indicate organ degeneration while scores above 55 suggest organ inflammation. Following the electrodermal screening, therapies are given according to the scores displayed at each of the various test sites.
Magnetic Therapy We are exposed to magnetic energy every day. Some is naturally generated by our body, by solar flares, by changes in the weather, and by the earth itself. Common electrical devices like radios, televisions, computers, microwave ovens, power wheelchairs, and commercial power lines also produce magnetic fields.
Magnetic therapy focuses on the use of external magnets and electromagnetic devices to relieving symptoms and reversing degenerative diseases. The negative poles of the magnets have shown benefits to health while the positive poles exhibit a harmful effect. It has been identified that cancer thrives in a high-acid, low-oxygen environment. Negative magnetic fields cause the cells to become more alkaline and to increase the oxygen level. The technique is called Magnetic Resonance Bio-oxidative Therapy and is still considered experimental even though there are reports of successful treatments of cancers of the prostate, brain, spine, skin and mouth.
Light Therapy Exposure to sunlight plays an important role in maintaining good health. Not only does it help the body produce Vitamin D; the sunlight also sends impulses to our brain's regulatory system. The brain then generates signals to control everything from sleep cycles and body temperature to digestion and immune function. Because of the body's need for light, poor lighting or minimal exposure to the sun can lead to health problems. Studies have linked poor lighting to fatigue, hostility, suppressed immune function, depression, hair loss, skin damage, strokes, and cancer.
'Full-Spectrum Light Therapy' has shown the ability to help with improving the overall health. Similar to exposure to sunlight, this therapy uses the entire range of light including ultraviolet. A study at Johns Hopkins University Medical School demonstrated a positive relationship between full-spectrum light and the prevention of breast, colon, and rectal cancers.
'Ultraviolet Light Therapy' is used both topically for skin lesions and through a process called hemo-irradiation for other cancers. Hemo-irradiation involves removing about a pint of blood, exposing it to ultraviolet light, and returning it to the patient's bloodstream. This technique has been reported to increase oxygen levels, neutralize body toxins, and balance the body's biochemicals.
'Photodynamic Therapy' or PDT is quite promising in handling some early stage cancers. This therapy involves injecting dyes or medications that are sensitive to light. These agents are absorbed by the cancer tumors which are then exposed to certain types of light. This technique has had a 90% success rate in Japan for the early stage cancers of the lung, stomach, esophagus, and cervix.
Further Information Most of you know that I am an advocate for learning more about your body and any illness for which you have been diagnosed. Education is a great tool in preventing disease. Here is a good book for Cancer and Alternative Medicine -- A Definitive Guide to Cancer by W. John Diamond, M.D., W. Lee Cowden, M.D., and Burton Goldberg.
The Definitive Guide to Cancer is a must-read. I recommend this book to everyone because it provides a great historical and medical background for the increase of cancer in today's society. It also describes 37 different alternative cancer treatments being used by physicians in the U.S. and around the world. The book is informative and eye-opening. I have used it as a reference many times while writing this series on Cancer.
